Photographer of the month/June – Dorian Huet.

Bonjour! And merci, for once again tuning into our mighty fine station! And today, we break the chainz (should that be legal?), or at least the sound barrier, in a move approximately seven thousand miles Northeast (of Chile that is!)… Once again, we have gone contre vents et marées, in order to bring to you good people, ‘Photographer of the month’ (June). And once again, we have a blazing feature, the Crème de la crème? Dames, Hommes, may I introduce to you (insert drum-roll!)… Mr Dorian Huet!!! – VS

... Agent provocateur?

Dorian Huet…

“I’m age twenty-five, born and raised in Paris! I’ve been riding BMX for about ten years and shooting for five. All thanks to my Dad, who taught me how to use his ‘Nikon FE’ film camera with ‘24mm Nikkor’ lens – Still my favorite equipment combination.

Foufou: "Negative MONSIEUR, en Route TOONTOWN via HELSINKI!"

After many-a-role of black and white films, I had to go to Barcelona for an internship and decided to get my first digital camera. No big ‘DSLR’ but enough to take nice photos every-day.

The camera had to be with me all the time, it’s never left me ever since – From a basic ‘Kodak Bridge’ eight mega-pixels, all the way to my ‘1Ds Mk III killing machine’.

Shooting on a daily basis seemed pointless at first, but after a few years, I realized I was operating a kind-of time machine; capable of enabling both myself and my subjects, the ability to revisit a previous point in time.

I don't have a fly ass caption for this one... But hey! it's in Barcelona!

Having access to an abundance of photographic material, made me want to create something with it – So I printed a book. Not for commercial purpose, just for my friends and I. Like a ‘family album’ but for friends; portraits mixed with snapshots, like fragments of life printed on paper.

You don't want to be doing this every time you ride! Praise the "time machine"!

After I graduated from business school (three years ago), I decided to go the photographic way; fully inspired by friends and magazines – It’s not the easy choice; making a living out of this is hard and you have got to be lucky!

Riding BMX myself made me more efficient in situations like contests and jams. So I’ve worked with magazines and shops on events and did my own reports in the meantime.

Louis keeps things simple...

Shooting BMX is my favorite subject so far, but I also shoot all kinds of pictures; Fashion, adverts, weddings…

I used to shoot with Nikon gear, but recently switched to ‘Canon’ to get my hands on the 1Ds Mark III with ‘pro series standard’ and telephoto lenses, plus a few flashes and pocket-wizards.

I love to play with flashlights, but the best photos are always taken with natural light, an element that’s really hard to play with…

... Yes, that's right; The TONY MALOUF! Badass.

Technique plays its part in the end image… But something I’ve learned over the years, is that you can take a very nice picture with almost anything; top of the range medium-format digital system, pro DSLR, simple compact camera or disposable piece of junk with outdated film… anything can shoot! It’s up to you!

Classic spot...

I’ve traveled to many countries over the last several years, including four trips to Barcelona, three visits to Finland, twice to the USA, Australia, the UK, Denmark… and counting! Always meeting nice people, making me want to go back!

Next stop is Stockholm, for the French BMX magazine, and hopefully a quick stop in Barcelona to see my friends there…

... Catalans got it good!!!

Enjoy your work!!!”

... The only impediments are in the mind...

Thanks for your time Mr Huet…

Dorian Huet got it going on...
